This is a delightful and rare brooch we have attributed to Walter Bosse dating to the 1950s. It depicts two striped fish swimming and is beautifully and skilfully designed
With a lovely 3D modelling it is gold tone metal (probably brass) with black painted stripes and bands of metalwork. The fish have little metal beads for eyes.
It has a pin to the back with a roll safety catch.
Such an unusual and eye-catching brooch.
A little research has attributed this brooch to Walter Bosse (1904-1979). An Austrian designer, sculptor and pioneer of modern European applied art. An extract from his design history below...
Towards the end of the 1940s, Bosse began a decisive shift in his work: he began experimenting with brass, by giving his ceramic figures a protective metal layer. This was the beginning of a new design language.
Black Gold Line and the collaboration with Herta Baller:-
Together with his business partner Herta Baller, he produced a series of decorative brass figures under the joint name Bosse/Baller Company. In the early 1950s, they introduced their characteristic Black Gold Line collection – small animals and everyday objects in black-lacquered brass with polished gold details. The series became internationally famous and is today iconic in midcentury modern design.
After financial setbacks, Bosse moved to Iserlohn in Germany in 1953, where he continued his production.
