This is a beautiful brooch by Liberty of London.
In gold tone metal with enamelling it is based on the design of Anglo Saxon Kentish disc brooches dating to the 6th-7th century AD. An example of one held in the British Museum collection is pictured for reference. Also see below for further information.
It has purple enamelling in the design with five amethyst coloured carbochons. The edge has coin like ribbing.
It is signed LIBERTY to the back and has a pin secured by a roll safety clasp.
It is in excellent condition.

Kent was an important centre for Anglo-Saxon jewelry production. The brooches were often made of silver-gilt with garnet and glass inlay and worn by people of high social status.
The style reflects traditions of eastern nomadic peoples and Roman jewelry techniques. They may have developed from earlier Romano-British disc brooches.
