This dress is part of a collection purchased directly from the the family of the late fashion designer John Bates (whose designer label was Jean Varon).
It is a gorgeous monochrome patterned dress in black and off white/ivory dating to the 1970s. Its made in a synthetic fabric imitating silk. It is probably an acetate mix. The pattern is cut so that the print forms a wide striped patterned border around the bottom of the dress.
It has a stand up mandarin type collar with a front neckline slit and single mother of pearl grey button. It features a dolman style sleeve typical of the 70s/80s fashion. With long sleeves it buttons at the cuff with matching mother of pearl buttons. It has a narrow matching fabric tie belt.
The shoulders, neckline collar and edges of the cuffs feature the fabric matching the pattern in the border print across the bottom of the dress.
Whether you nip it in at the waist with the belt or wear it loose its a vintage design classic that can be worn dressed up or down for many occasions.
It is in excellent condition and has been handwashed.
We would estimate it would best fit a current UK 10/12 but please see measurements below.
