Fashion History Snapshot
Established by brothers Michael and Jay Chernow it was originally the Monocraft Products Company which made plated plaques for use in handbags. Their bags were sought after and known for their quality.
In the late 1930s they began to focus on jewellery as costume jewellery became more popular. In 1937 the company changed its name to Monet and it began producing high quality costume jewellery. They were led by Edmond Granville, a former Cartier jewellery designer and became a leading fashion brand.
Since then Monet has changed hands many times including acquisition by Liz Claibourne in 2000. Today the brand continues to be favoured by vintage costume jewllery collectors and sought after by those who love vintage jewellery design.
